Join Canyon Lodge No13You may have come here while trying to answer the question "What are Masons?" This is actually an easy question to answer, but because of the supposedly "secret" nature of our ritualistic work, Masons themselves tend to think that they cannot discuss about what they do. Nothing could be further from the truth! What Do Masons Do? One of the most
concise descriptions of what Masons do was written
in the Northern Light magazine by the Sovereign
Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, Northern
Jurisdiction by Ill. Robert O. Ralston.
We exist to improve
life - the lives of our members, their families,
the community, the country and the world. No
other group has this mission. We should be
talking about everything we do as Masons, from
building character to rebuilding broken bodies,
from restoring sight, to releasing men and women
from the bondage of mental illness.
There have been hundreds of books and articles written about Freemasons and their affiliated organizations, but the best testimonies of our institution can be found in the charities that Masons actively support:
Masons actively support youth organizations DeMolay (young men) and Job's Daughters (young women), provide youth with a "safe place" to learn virtues like "Faith", "Patriotism" and "Love". These organizations regularly produce outstanding scholars and leaders who go on to spread their love of humanity and knowledge to others. Is Masonry a Religion? Nope. To be initiated a Mason, the candidate must profess a belief in a Supreme Being, a Creator of the Earth and the Universe. Masonry does not involve itself with the interpretation of God, his names or the manner of worshipping Him. Freemasonry is therefore unique in that as an organization based on a religious foundation there are commonly found members of Christian (Catholic and Protestant), Jewish and Muslim faiths in the same lodge room. We all have great love and respect for the Supreme Architect and we reverence Him within our Lodges, but we leave the teaching of doctrine to the Churches where it correctly belongs. Our most basic tenets are Relief, Truth and Brotherly Love. By Relief we endeavor to improve the lives of ourselves, our families, and the conditions of our communities through self-improvement, charity and community service. By Truth we are constantly exhorted to always "act upon the square", to be honest in our dealings with everyone we come in contact with. More importantly we are taught to seek truth wherever we turn our eyes, ears, thoughts and minds. By being truthful we learn to identify truth and to demand truth from others. Brotherly Love inspires us to be kind to every intelligent creature we meet, for it is the only effective weapon to combat hatred. It teaches us to be tolerant and respectful of others. We also learn that through this Love we can become examples of great good. We are also taught that Brotherly Love requires us to gently remind an erring person of their responsibility to themselves, their families and their community, and that so long as that erring person can be reformed we must continue to show patience, guidance and love.Does this sound interesting to you? If you would like to surround yourself with men and women of character and high morals, if you want to be a positive force for your family and community, if you want a chance to help those who are unable to help themselves, if you want to have the opportunity to be a big "brother" for a young man or young women, if you want to be part of an Organization that has been teaching people to be honest, forthright, and caring for centuries, then contact us! We would love to have the opportunity to share more about Freemasonry with you.Download a Petition Completed petitions should be mailed to:Canyon Lodge No13 F.&A.M Masonic Temple 7689 South Center Square Midvale, UT 84047
